Operating Engineer (3rd Class or Experienced 4th Class)

A growing thermal energy utility is seeking a 3rd Class, or highly experienced 4th Class, Operating Engineer to support the operation and expansion of a modern district energy system. The utility provides heating and domestic hot water to a mix of residential, commercial, and mixed-use buildings through a closed-loop hot water network and centralized energy facilities.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Operating Engineer is responsible for safe and efficient plant operations, system monitoring, maintenance, and asset management. The role supports both day-to-day operations and long-term system reliability as the utility continues to expand its service area and capacity.

Key Responsibilities
 
  • Maintain compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Operate, inspect, and service central heating plants, distribution piping, and energy transfer stations.
  • Monitor system performance through HMI/PLC interfaces and respond to alarms and abnormal conditions.
  • Troubleshoot issues, perform corrective actions, and complete routine equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with contractors and communicate with building representatives.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies.
  • Maintenance & Asset Management
  • Perform preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and related equipment.
  • Follow established procedures and contribute to updates of operating and maintenance documentation.
  • Support identification and resolution of system deficiencies.

Additional Duties
  • Provide input on operations, maintenance planning, and asset management initiatives
  • Assist with other tasks as required to support utility operations.

What the successful candidate will bring:
  • Technical Safety BC Power Engineering Certificate (3rd Class or 4th Class).
  • 3+ years of experience with mechanical/electrical systems, instrumentation, automation, or communications systems.
  • Experience with thermal energy systems, utilities, or district energy is an asset.
  • Familiarity with PLC/BMS systems.
  • Strong understanding of applicable safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, independent judgment, and ability to prioritize in a dynamic environment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate District Energy Systems safely & independently with limited to no supervision
