Job Description


We’re looking for a Director of Engineering - Structural Steel in the construction and industrial manufacturing sector.

Our client delivers large-scale, custom-built structural solutions across North America and is poised for continued growth and technical innovation. They are searching for a senior technical leader to oversee the engineering, drafting, and product innovation teams. Reporting to the VP of Operations, this individual will drive engineering performance, ensure executional excellence, and implement scalable systems and strategies to support complex project delivery. The Director will play a key role in improving operational efficiency, leading teams, and aligning technical direction with broader business goals.

Director responsibilities:
  • Oversee and coordinate engineering, design, and technical drafting teams
  • Implement strategic plans for product development and engineering optimization
  • Ensure on-time delivery of design packages that meet quality and regulatory standards
  • Lead recruitment, mentorship, and performance management of technical staff
  • Collaborate with internal teams and third-party professionals on project-specific design requirements
  • Support the evolution and launch of new or improved product lines
  • Manage departmental resources, budgets, priorities, and KPIs
  • Oversee the development and enforcement of internal engineering standards and procedures
  • Conduct peer reviews and provide design input across structural and mechanical disciplines
  • Resolve challenges related to design, manufacturing, and field implementation
  • Liaise with sales, estimating, and production teams to align technical solutions with customer needs
  • Champion a culture of innovation, accountability, and high-performance
  • Maintain awareness of code changes, material technologies, and design best practices

The successful candidate has:
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or equivalent
  • 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in engineering and product development
  • Extensive knowledge of building structures, materials, and design processes
  • Familiarity with applicable North American building codes and industry standards
  • Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, PDM, and structural analysis tools such as STAAD or RAM (asset)
  • Strong ability to lead technical teams in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
  • Proven history of improving workflows, increasing efficiency, and reducing design complexity
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while ensuring quality and compliance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with confidence engaging across all levels
  • Mechanical aptitude and creative problem-solving skills
  • Background in cost analysis and design-for-manufacturing principles
  • Eligibility to stamp or seal drawings or acquire licensing within six months (asset)

Compensation and benefits:
  • The discussed salary range is $140,000 – $150,000, based on qualifications and experience
