Job Description

About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director of Communications will lead and manage operational communications projects and activities, overseeing a team of Communications staff and interpreter/translator personnel. The role includes ensuring the seamless production of key reports, planning and commemorating significant events such as Nunavut Day, and enhancing digital communication strategies through website and social media platforms. The Assistant Director will also collaborate with Information Technology teams to enhance digital infrastructure, remote access, and digital information management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, execution, and management of operational communications projects, including the annual report and the annual State of Inuit Culture and Society.
- Develop and oversee strategic communication plans to enhance awareness of programs and services available to Nunavut Inuit.
- Manage and support a team of three interpreter/translator staff, ensuring high-quality communication in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, and English.
- Oversee the organization’s digital presence, ensuring websites and social media platforms are effective and up to date.
- Coordinate special events and activities, including Board of Directors meetings, Annual General Meetings, and cultural commemorations.
- Manage internal and external communications, ensuring consistency and alignment with the organization's advocacy goals.
- Work closely with Information Technology teams to enhance digital tools that support leadership and staff, including remote access, digital data management, and conferencing solutions.
- Supervise and provide direction to all Communications staff and freelance personnel during key organizational meetings and initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with financial, human resources, and administrative policies, including departmental budgeting and funding proposals.
- Advocate for Inuit rights and self-determination in research, communications, and policy development.
- Develop and manage relationships with government agencies, regional associations, and key stakeholders to support strategic communications initiatives.
- Graduate Degree in a relevant field with 5+ years of experience in communications, public affairs, or research.
- Strong leadership experience, with 2+ years in communications project management and team supervision.
- Experience in policy research, data management, and research proposal writing.
- General awareness of Nunavut Inuit culture, language, and aspirations.
- Excellent knowledge of territorial, federal, and international legislation, policies, and protocols related to Inuit rights.
- Strong financial acumen with experience in budget management and funding proposal development.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
- Proficiency in digital and social media strategies to enhance community engagement.
- Ability to speak Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun, or a willingness to learn, is required.
- Competitive salary: $117,000-$155,000 depending on experience
